Interior Design Ideas: How To Design Your Dream Nursery?

Are you are about to have the privilege of becoming a first-time parent?

There are a million and one things to do, decisions to make, lists to organise and a lifetime of information to take in in!

This blog is designed to alleviate some of the google searching required to create your dream nursery space for your new arrival.

The thought of designing a nursery can become a daunting prospect. Fear not! Armed with the right guidance and information this can be an exciting experience that allows you to create something truly personal and creative. We have combined our most important elements of things to consider when thinking about creating this space. When we create a nursery we start with the most important factor: functionality, which is the least thought about consideration from new parents-as it would be given the dive into the parent newness deep-end, and not knowing what to expect!.

It is amazing just how many activities will be taking place in a nursery: changing, feeding, dressing, bathing, playing, sleeping to name few!. From picking the most appropriate colours to choosing safe non-toxic options. This is our go-to guide to create your dream nursery for your most precious gift.

Neutral colour pallets have become increasingly popular with design, branding and interiors especially for parents looking to anticipate their new arrival and take the stress out of creating a gender specific design. Neutral palettes allow for parents to become quickly organised and in addition choose a theme that resonates with the entire household. Designing a nursery is fun, especially as there is a huge array of neutral palette selections available to you. Colours that allow for creativity and incorporating a design theme. Creating a nursery allows for creative freedom, we encourage you to experiment with colours prints and tactile textures. The nursery should a place you also enjoy as you will be spending a lot of time in the nursery. Scandinavian interior styles work so well due to the abundant use of neutral colours, textures and prints, with the ‘norm’ in Scandinavian nursery style adopting the same principles. If you are thinking about incorporating a theme within a neutral palette design: our suggestion would be to use a non-elaborate pattern like a chevron, polka dots or a geometric, use this as your base for the overall theme and incorporate the same influences in little details and accents throughout the design. Adopting the use of the same theme throughout will provide a design aesthetic, flow and re-enforce your chosen theme.

Nursery Furniture: Cot, Crib or Bassinet

The investment in quality sturdy nursery furniture is an absolute essential! The cot, crib or bassinet is normally considered the focal point of the nursery. Really do your research here and decide again (dare we refer to the Functionality word again!) what the uses of the furniture will be for example: is storage required as part of the design?, is sustainable design the most important factor? Make a list anticipating what your functional needs will be and order them in terms of importance, make sure your furniture meets those requirements and needs before aesthetic needs!

We highly recommend 3 key elements contributing to your final design choices:

1) ‘Sturdy’

2) Multi-purpose use: storage, adaptable, has a changing facility incorporated.

3) Recommendation: there is no better review than directly from a parent who will give you an open honest review of the tested and tried products available to you. This will include safety, durability and what not to allocate your budget towards.

The second essential, which requires investment is the nursery chair, rocker or glider. As a new parent you will spend a lot of time using this item. Comfort is key! as well as storage to hold items you might need within your immediate reach items such as muslin cloths and essential items. A lot of parents opt for furniture that is functional and can be re-used within another room in the household after use in the nursery.

Natures way
Your newborn bundle of complete joy will not have the immune system you have been building up for many years. Exposure to toxins can be potentially very harmful and it is important you consider the finishes you use within the nursery are non-toxic. Advances in non-toxic paint are now the ‘norm’ with many unique online boutiques creating colour palette choices that are modern whilst providing the required health benefits.

Well known and established brands producing quality non-toxic paints include: Farrow and Ball, the organic and natural paint company, earthborn natural paints. Little Knights produces some great colours specifically with nursery design in mind: Little Knights is 100% VOC-free, allergen-free and odour-free. It releases NO toxic emissions into the air, and is free from carcinogens, petrochemicals and hazardous fumes of any kind.

 Soft..soft…soft…

Comfort equals luxury. Layering your nursery space with a variety of soft fabrics and plush textiles adds not only an element of visual interest but also adds to the overall cosiness, warmth and luxury of the room. Organic cotton, 100% cotton, and fabrics that feel soft to the touch will play a key role in creating a comfortable and relaxing environment within your nursery space. A key point to note when selecting fabrics is the sensitivity of your baby’s skin. Look for pure cotton bedding that’s soft to the touch, keeping in mind the baby’s sensitive and delicate skin. A small thing to include within your space is a room temperature device to keep a firm eye on the temperature of the room: this can have a direct impact on your baby’s sleep, for example if the room was too warm or too cold. One of our favourite boutique baby brands is The Little Green Sheep, the focus for thier brand is on ethically sourced, quality, handcrafted and luxury products. With particular reference to the soft cotton blankets Little Green Sheep produce knitted and cotton blankets in beautiful earthy colours and supplied with a large label listing the product benefits and exclaiming ‘with love’. My First Years is a brand focusing on luxury items with added personalisation, from hand crafted blankets, booties and keepsakes to bespoke personalised items for your new baby.
