Interior design is a distinct profession with specialised knowledge applied to the planning and design of interior environments that promote health, safety, and welfare while supporting and enhancing the human experience. Founded upon design and human behaviour theories and research, interior designers apply evidence-based methodologies to identify, analyse, and synthesise information in generating holistic, technical, creative, and contextually-appropriate design solutions. There is sometimes a blurring of these professions, and many articles will reference that the distinct difference is qualifications-this sometimes causes angst as it can serve to discredit the exceptional and inspiring work carried out by Interior Stylist’s.

10 STEPS TO GET YOU MOTIVATED INTO PURSUING INTERIOR STYLING OR INTERIOR DESIGN
1. Read all about it!
Take the time to do as much research as you possibly can, extra knowledge never hurt anyone! The more you find the closer to answers to questions you might have!
2. Expert Help
Take a good look at industry experts: how they got started, what credentials did they build up along the way, what experience did they build upon? What does there ‘warts and all’ about the profession say? Does their experience correlate with what I think about the roles involves? Start with greats like Kelly Hoppen, Kelly Wearstler, Nate Berkus
3. Find a mentor
Take a look at any successful person and behind their story I guarantee you will find they found, focused or took learning from a mentor. It is amazing the amount of people who really want to help. Take a look at forums or people in the profession you admire and do not be afraid to reach out!
4. Contact Course Leaders and Tutors
If you are considering embarking on additional learning and have found a course of interest: give them a call, find out more about the course outlet and what support is available after you have qualified. The more you know, the better you will feel about the commitment you are about to invest in!
5. Work Experience
Forget the connotations about work experience, what counts if you decide to immerse yourself into the industry is to get as much experience as you can: you never know who you will meet or what doors this will open for you-quite simply go for it!
6. Library, Books, Resources
Always take the opportunity to empower yourself with as much knowledge as you can. From YouTube to MasterClass there are some amazing places you can access sometimes free great resources to help you on your quest.
7. Blogs
There are so many blogging sources online to help you access articles, links and resources to motivate and guide you into your chosen profession. All of them are free and most of them provide additional newsletters and info-graphics that will assist your interior passion.
8. Free Seminars/Webinars
There are literally tons of these all over the UK, both online and physically. The world is your oyster on this resource.
9. Ask to interview an interior stylist or designer
You would not believe in the value of this exercise, it can really help you determine and shape your own future within this profession. It can be done by email if necessary if the stylist or designer is to busy you could compile some questions to ask for them to complete for you in their own leisure.
10. Confidence is key
Do not be afraid!, changing career direction or starting a new career is a very daunting prospect as you venture into the complete unknown. It is an old cliche but remembering that everyone has once been where you stood now and the only way you are going to get where you want to be is by taking the plunge.
