We hope everyone is staying safe and mentally healthy in these unprecedented times.

The current Covid19 pandemic seems to making it’s presences felt in many second waves occurring across the globe. I am currently waving my 1 million x 1 million sq ft ‘white flag’ very highly as I hope the United Kingdom manages to avoid a second lock-down, as does everywhere else!

During lock-down I have managed to delve more deeply into the world of self-improvement. If I had a million excuses for not doing something Covid19 has brought an end to that and rightly so!. There are some incredible free and at subsidised rates online design courses from credible sources that have made learning really easy, fun, informative and engaging.

Digital education has obviously seen a serge with so many institutions using social media as a platform to educate, empower and inform in creative ways. Take for example The Getty Museum https://www.getty.edu in Los Angeles, USA called on its online followers to recreate famous Art with household items, the campaign went viral and there were some super impressive entries from Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series in back garden ponds, to people fashioning their children into Johannes Vermeer subjects. The Getty were inundated with submissions. The Getty were inspired by a similar challenge issued by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en) from their own Instagram campaign titled “Between Art and Quarantine”. One of our personal favourites below, included in the design was a much treasured possession during quarantine!

Quarantine has allowed for online education to re-shape itself with a greater increase in accessibility to experts and noteworthy establishments.

Here is our recommended list of the best e-learning platforms on courses in art and design: happy learning!

1. MasterClass

https://masterclass.com

Masterclass is a paid subscription, but please note!, they regularly have free trials and free days of learning. Masterclass is one of the most immersive online e-learning sources available. Where else can you find a collection of the worlds best experience, brilliant minds and expertise all in one location. There is an online tutorial from the iconic Kelly Wearstler, which takes a look at everything from lighting to shape and is a ‘how to’ design like a professional course. There is every topic you could possibly think of, with interactive videos compiled by the experts and bite-sized chunks of learning so you do not feel overwhelmed with your newly founded fonts on knowledge. Each lesson is designed to feel like a unique personally tailored video with the feeling that the expert is speaking with you on a one-to-one basis. The videos are very glossy, super professional and polished-think Actors in promotional interviews. These comprehensive courses advocate the learning journey from beginner to advance levels and the purpose of the learning is not to pass exams or tests but to feel educated and inspired.

2. MoMa

https://moma.com

MoMa in New York has introduced a number of free online art courses on Coursera (https://www.coursera.org) you can register for free and there are in addition paid courses which are worth noting! These courses offer the opportunity to hear directly from artists and designers but also present a closer look at works in MoMA’s collection and exhibitions. The What is contemporary Art course explores 70 works of art made between 1980 and the present day whilst in addition analysing the practices of artists today. MoMA’s course on Postwar Abstract Painting presents a comprehensive look at materials, techniques, and approaches of seven New York School artists, including Willem de Kooning, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko. One of my favourite selections is: the social, cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of a selection of garments which are broken down in the Fashion as Design segment.

3. SOTHEBY’S

https://sothebys.com

The iconic auction house offers educational programs that span contemporary art to curating, luxury to logistics, art law to valuation, and many more, for professionals, pre-college audiences, and graduate students. Sotheby’s has an extensive online course catalogue  which ranges from one-hour live video lectures to eight-week in-depth explorations. One that we particularly love is the Women and Art course which charts the experiences of female artists from antiquity to the present day, through an introduction to the gender of politics and visual culture.

4. HARVARD UNIVERSITY

https://www.harvard.edu.com

Taking a look at Looking at the complex relationship to its social and historical contexts as well as its relationship with technology. The course offers an insight into how architecture engages, mediates, and expresses a culture’s complex aspirations. There is a wealth of information on offer here with the online resource building monthly. Who says there is no such thing as free!

6. CHRISTIE’S EDUCATION

One of their most recent offerings: Lock-down learning: 101 Surprising ideas inspired by Art focuses on knowledge and skills-building through research and play. The course uses Henri Rousseau’s famous painting Surprised! Tiger in a Tropical Storm as a starting point, and also uses the same methodical approach to other works of art for analysis.
