Design with Purpose…

A mood-board is a collection of images gathered together to express an idea. A mood-board is a step inside the mind of a designer and how they envision the final design, it is also an interpretation of the clients desired vision, project goals and dreams. Graphic designers, interior designers, industrial designers and photographers all use the medium of mood-boards to convey a creative vision and to visually illustrate the style they wish to pursue. Pinterest is an excellent example of an online mood-board allowing for the collation of images, ideas and a visual expression of one or multiple ideas. Mood-boards are not just limited to interior design, fashion designers use mood-boards to create design ideas usually conveyed in sketches.

A mood-board within interior design is usually made up of images, fabric samples, textures, tiles, wallpaper, upholstery, wood, fabric swatches, tiles, and colours to communicate the design concept. The board acts as a blank canvas of which the design is built upon before it is turned into a reality. The board also allows for client to become immersed in the concept by engaging with the materials presented for the design and interacting with the finishes and tactile materials that may be used in the design.

At SPEAK we design a mood-board for each room design, we use a simple 5 step design process to enable the client to feel fully engaged, informed and involved in every intricate detail of the journey. Watching a design turn into reality from the board to the space is an exciting time fro the client and SPEAK.

There are an array of benefits for using mood boards including:

  • Alignment between the client and the designer vision.

  • Colour considerations, materials and design ideas can be fully explored during this process

  • A Mood-board allows for multiple design concepts for the room to be presented

  • The rich and infinite possibilities can be fully explored through a mood-board.

  • The Designer learns to taste’s, wants and needs of the client style and design brief.

  • A valuable tool that stimulates the design process.

As far back as Egyptian times when tomb walls provided symbols and pictures depicted life scenarios and acted as a visual history of how the Egyptians lived, their personalities and afterlife stories. is where the origins of this concept begin.
