We get inundated with email requests for interior design internships and professional guidance on ‘how to become an interior designer’. The honest answer is: there are no quick wins, whilst you can emulate designs you may have seen on Pinterest, it takes designers years in industry to hone and craft their own individual and signature styles. Many of the images you view will depict the personal style of the clients expressed wishes, and not sometimes the vision of the interior designer.

Following on from these requests we embarked on an interior design journey of taking a look into what actually exists online for aspiring interior design enthusiasts, or more importantly what exists for those wanting to take on projects but avoid the extensive study with time they do not have and the exorbitant fees that go along with academic study. We sincerely struggled to find any platforms giving anything away for free, or offering any bonus content as a standard feature.

WHAT DO SOME ONLINE DESIGN COURSES OFFER?

Studying an interior design course at a credible academic settings is lengthy, but teaches the disciplines of the process and how designers have to take into account more than just aesthetics when it comes to interior spaces-even before they think about the actual design and functionality.

A huge amount goes into the overall process prior to the fun of design concepts. Working heavily with suppliers and handling the administration side of things are full time roles in addition to the actual design work! Honesty when it comes to this design conversation is the best policy!

This blog post aims to avoid mud slinging which is why we do not mention any names, as we appreciate many of the courses we reviewed internally: Still, had hard-work and valuable content and value behind them. We reviewed all the content through the lens of what our clients and customers felt mattered and was missing for them and the project needs.

What we found was currently available included the following:

Non-Beneficial:

  • Expensive courses

  • Exorbitant fees associated

  • Time consuming

  • No post-course plan

  • Unable to achieve designs like a designer

  • Labour intensive

  • Post-course-lack of support

  • Unable to apply course into a physical interior design project

  • Complex industry jargon – unfamiliar to the user

  • Unrelatable case-studies

  • Lack of variety

  • Lack of technical focus

  • Imbalance of time on topics

  • Lack of bonus material

  • No inside industry secrets

What are the mAIn reasons for THE lack of commitment to study WITHIN DESIGN?

One of the main reasons for not studying interior design is the exorbitant design fees associated, which can place a burden on the student. Ultimately, the overall goal should be each individual is empowered with the skills and guidance to achieve their own interior design projects, and if they decide to take this study further into professional services they are well prepared for what kinds of obstacles will lie ahead within this field.

There is a distinct confusion with how the industry operates and how the TV and media portray the interior design industry. There is a huge amount of behind the scenes work, administration and endless hours spent by designers sourcing the right items for an interior space, whilst working within the confines of a structure and honouring the budget, vision and goals of the client.

The TV and Media showcase the final result and usually skip over the final budget, any technical difficulties and changes to what the original design might be. Many aspiring interior designers will not realise there are many ‘draft’ levels which occur before the final design and many weeks of work which take place even before a single item is sourced and purchased.

A day in the life of an interior designer might surprise you!

To give some context to what a typical day in the life of an interior designer might be to convey the above points.

These are just some of the typical things an interior designer might do on a daily basis:

Ultimately, the decision about deciding to study design lies in asking yourself this initial question:

‘Do you want to design for yourself, or others?’

As referenced previously, as a designer it is not always possible for you to have a full creative license on projects when designing for others, a respect for the client’s vision and goals must come first, it is the client who will be living within the space long after you have completed your work as an interior designer.

The next time you take a look at an interior design image you like, know there is always a deeper story behind each and every one of those designs and processes.

These vital skills will allow you to complete multiple interior design projects within your interior spaces.
